Fall Show: Yellow Face

Written by David Henry Hwang
Directed by Susanna Jaramillo
Produced by Siani Woods
Assistant Produced by Hannah Paquet

The lines between truth and fiction blur with hilarious and moving results in David Henry Hwang’s unreliable memoir. Asian-American playwright DHH, fresh off his Tony Award win for M. Butterfly, leads a protest against the casting of Jonathan Pryce as the Eurasian pimp in the original Broadway production of Miss Saigon, condemning the practice as “yellowface.” His position soon comes back to haunt him when he mistakes a Caucasian actor, Marcus G. Dahlman, for mixed-race, and casts him in the lead Asian role of his own Broadway-bound comedy, Face Value. As he clings to his old multicultural rhetoric, this new racist witch hunt forces DHH to confront the complex and ever-changing role that “face” plays in American life today.

Winter Show: Well

Written by Lisa Kron
Directed by Samantha Friskey
Produced by Eduardo Ortuño

“This play is not about my mother and me,” begins the character of Lisa. But, of course, it is about her mother, and her mother’s extraordinary ability to heal a changing neighborhood, despite her inability to heal herself. In this “solo show with people in it,” Kron asks the provocative question: “Do we create our own illness?” The answers she gets are much more complicated than she bargained for as the play spins dangerously out of control into unexpected territory.

Spring Show: Next to Normal

Book and Lyrics by Brian Yorkey
Music by Tom Kitt
Produced by Hannah Spear
Directed by Grace Mattes
Music Directed by Mason Emmert

This rock musical centers on what appears to be a typical American family: Dad’s an architect; Mom rushes to pack lunches and pour cereal; their daughter and son are bright, wise-cracking teens. And yet their lives are anything but normal, because the mother has been battling bipolar disorder for 16 years. “Next to Normal” takes audiences into the minds and hearts of each character, presenting their family’s story with love, sympathy and heart.
